CBSE announcing plans to integrate value education into its curriculum

An astounding 70% of kids aged 13-18 think it’s fine to be dishonest in order to succeed. This is one among the key findings of a HT—C fore moral health survey

With the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) announcing plans to integrate value education into its curriculum, HT commissioned a survey carried out by C fore in major metropolitan cities to gauge moral proclivities of young people. One thousand students, between the ages of 13 and 18, were surveyed. The psychological profile that emerges is both worrying and encouraging.
Consider this: when asked if dishonesty was acceptable for success, 70% said yes. The response to whether it is fine to cheat one friend for another was split almost midway — 43% said ‘yes’ or ‘sometimes’, while 43% said ‘no’. The rest were unsure. Consumerism also seems entrenched within this group and causes competition among peers. Another place where competition shows up is popularity on social networks, considered overwhelmingly important.
On the positive side though, youngsters come across as confident with a high degree of self-belief. They are aware, sensitive and determined. “However, it appears that as they grow into adults, a lot of the positive values get sidelined,” says senior psychiatrist Dr Sanjay Chugh, who helped HT formulate the survey.
Between 2001 and 2010, the number of juvenile crimes rose from 16,509 to 22,740, a 37.7% increase, according to the National Crime Records Bureau. This is reflected in many recent incidents of violent crimes ( seebox). Dr Shyama Chona, an educationist and member of the CBSE says, “We’ve seen too many instances of children acting out. Value education used to be informal and expected. Now, formalisation in the syllabus will make it more serious. Righteousness will only emerge when you turn it to marks.”
Earlier this month, CBSE announced a first-of-its-kind system to connect academics with ethics. But measuring values education through marks is debatable, say experts. An official at the National Council for Educational Research and Training (NCERT) who requested anonymity, says, “You can’t assess values through exams. Evaluation has to be of processes, not the product. If you want to teach sanitary habits, create a sanitary environment at school. So if you want to teach integrity, display the same attitude in the classroom.”
Another concern is that values in the education system lack a societal connect. Dr Samir Parikh, director, mental health at Fortis agrees. “Merely making it a subject in a curriculum is not going to inculcate values,” he says. “We have become socially apathetic towards each other. Adults are struggling with moral ambiguity and teenagers are simply mirroring their behaviour,” he adds.
Character education is being debated across the world. In China, the government’s attempts to introduce moral education are being protested by the opposition on the claim that it will ‘brainwash’ students. In Australia and Singapore, value education models are funded by the state. In Australia, the local school community — teachers, parents and students — is involved in framing the programme. In the West, the issue is more complicated. The American system was earlier rooted in Christian fundamentals. During the Bush administration, attempts were made to equate moral education with conservative and Republican beliefs.
The Indian context gives moral education an added hue due to diversity in Indian society, says Chona. “We have to teach secularism, tolerance and an acceptance of multiculturalism,” she says.
Widening economic differences are also adding complexity. When respondents were asked about their attitude towards less-privileged students (after implementation of the Right To Education), 8% felt they should be taught separately while 37%, said ‘they can study in the same class but I wouldn’t hang out with them’. Such an outlook is being created and reinforced by adults. In Bangalore recently, a school’s indifference was put on display when a news report said that students admitted under RTE had been forced to sit in the back of the class, stand separately during assemblies and that a tuft of their hair was cut off by school authorities to distinguish them from other students.
Thus, while values education is required, experts say the approach could be better. “Introducing moral education through the curriculum is ambitious,” says Dr Sarada Balagopalan, a fellow at the Delhi-based Centre for the Study of Developing Societies and chief advisor to NCERT on Social and Political Life textbooks. She says, “We imbibe values from instruction, example, watching, seeing, and influences too numerous to be contained in a curriculum.”
CBSE’s move has begun for classes IX and X, and will be expanded in months to come. Subjects across the syllabus will contain moral lessons. For instance, in geography, teachers can stress on interdependence of countries, environmental responsibility and global unity. The results would then be judged in value-based questions in examinations.
CBSE is not the only one to focus on character education. In the International Baccalaureate (IB) schema, “Integrity lies at the centre of the learner’s profile,” says education consultant Abha Adams. In IB schools, 150 hours of community service is compulsory, and involves discussion and application of values.
Unfortunately, a 2010 study by the US department of education stated that value education programmes do not improve behaviour or performance of students. Perhaps then, India’s troubles are far worse than they seem.

Inspiring students to excel

Inspiring students to excel

The sustained quest for excellence in management education is visible across the globe and within Indian metros as well. Over the years, India's leading management institutions or B-Schools have also been constantly raising the bar and benchmarking themselves against the best in the world.
Excellence in management education is reflected in aspects like strong industry linkages, providing live project opportunities to enable application of knowledge, development of EQ and SQ in addition to IQ.
Indian B-Schools offer an excellent environment for gaining practical experience as well as the best academic opportunities. The presence of commercial hubs and industry nerve centres also makes way for internship opportunities for students across the board.

B-School evaluation

B-School evaluation
While there are a large number of B-schools available, not all of them really cater to the needs of the corporate world. Therefore, students must be very careful in choosing their B-school. They must look into physical and academic infrastructure, course curriculum, full-time faculty strength and other avenues of development offered by the institutes in addition to classroom activities.
The brand value of the management institute is also very important for students. Students must first verify that if they take admission to a particular institute, whether they will get value for their money or not. These days corporate world puts a lot of emphasis on discipline, office manners and etiquettes and soft skills. Students must check if the institute where they want to take admission works in these areas.
The basic concept of management education in India is undergoing a phenomenal change. With globalization increasing at a rapid pace, mergers and acquisitions on the rise, a greater number of management graduates from India are pursuing careers abroad. Therefore, the emphasis now is on preparing them to be global managers, without compromising on the inherent strengths of an Indian education.
Institutes that are focusing on creating management graduates who are tech-savvy and sensitized to issues like corporate social responsibility as well, should therefore be preferred.
Industry-Academia interaction on a global level coupled with International curriculum, faculty, internships and campuses are essential for giving students much-needed exposure to the corporate life and a global lifestyle.
B-Schools in North India, especially Delhi and National Capital Region, offer an irresistible combination of quality education levels, seemingly unlimited options to choose from, experienced faculty from across the globe, extensive interaction with the industry, access to the latest technology and excellent placement opportunities as well. Most education institutes also offer huge campuses with facilities to match, a world-class ambience and modern amenities.
Another aspect where these B-Schools score over their rivals is the greater scope for providing a wide choice of electives as well as customised, industry and company-specific courses, tailored to suit individual requirements.
At the end of the day, the bottom line rules, with management courses being seen as a means rather than an end. Placement is another primary objective, which determines which B-School is ranked higher by students.
The most important factor that needs to be considered, however, is the differential that each institution provides. This is especially relevant when you have so many institutes to choose from.

Get ready for the CAT scan Students eyeing management careers have begun gearing up for the most important entrance examination in India

Get ready for the CAT scan
Students eyeing management careers have begun gearing up for the most important entrance examination in India

Each year, the beginning of the monsoon season in India also heralds the calm before a different kind of storm. Management aspirants from across the country wait anxiously for the official CAT notification (get the details for voucher sales, registration, test dates and results below on this page), which will help them take the first step towards their desired careers.
The process for prospective candidates would begin with buying a scratch-voucher from the designated bank branches, and, then, registering online for CAT 2012. Instructions on access to online registration will be given in the voucher, and, detailed registration instructions will be on the CAT website www.catiim.in.
The Common Admission Test or CAT as it is better known is considered to be one of the most competitive exams held for those aiming to pursue a career in the field of business administration.
The significance of CAT for students can be gauged by the fact that in addition to the IIMs, a substantial number of B-Schools in India (over a hundred) have registered for it and many more would also rely on the CAT score for their admission process.
In fact, gearing up for CAT is something most students begin to do right after Class XII itself. The idea is to put in sustained efforts over a three-year period instead of leaving it to the last minute. There are also those who believe in just making one big concerted effort for five to six months before CAT, opining that it is the better option.
Whatever the preferred route, it is clear that CAT requires students to put their best foot forward. The CAT score can make or break management career aspirations, so one should not make the mistake of taking the examination or the preparation that it entails lightly. Moreover, ever since the format was computerized, there has been some amount of confusion among students about what it entails; the process to be followed and so on.
What management aspirants need to clearly understand is that CAT is a computer-based test (CBT) and not an Internet-based test (IBT). You cannot answer it online or at your home.
The format of the test is more or less the same. The only thing that has changed is that instead of reading the questions in a paper booklet and darkening the ovals on the answer-sheet, a candidate will read the questions on a computer terminal and choose an answer by clicking on the correct option.
Candidates will have to test on a pre-assigned workstation in the testing venue. There will be two separately timed sections in the test, the first being Quantitative Ability and Data Interpretation, followed by Verbal Ability and Logical Reasoning. There will be 30 questions in each section.
Each of the sections will be 1 hour and 10 minutes (i.e. 70 minutes). Including a 15-minute tutorial before the start of the test which candidates are advised to go through, the total duration of the test will be 2 hours and 35 minutes.
There will be an on-screen timer counting down from 70 minutes once a section begins. When the time is up, that section will end and candidates will not be able to go back to it. The second section will then begin and the on-screen timer will start counting down from 1 hour 10 minutes again. Once the second section ends, the test will end.
Considering there are just a few months in hand (less than three in fact) management aspirants need to understand the parameters of evaluation and have an action plan in place. Plus, after appearing for CAT, one has to prepare for the other entrance test processes like the group discussion/ personal interview (usually referred to by the acronym GD/PI), personality tests, essay writing, etc.
The emphasis is on evaluating the following skills of the management candidate; the ability to generate ideas, take an initiative whenever the opportunity presents, lateral thinking, communication skills, clarity of thought, group dynamics, presentation skills and awareness of key issues. Experts point out that the overall focus is on personality traits and an ability to strike the right balance between individual excellence and group performance.
Management programs are preferred career facilitators as they offer a lucrative option to fresh graduates. Attractive pay packets and placements in the reputed corporate being offered at college-level itself is the primary attraction of an MBA degree.
Management education is seen as an investment that can pay rich dividends in future. Possessing a MBA degree can make all the difference between being a boss or a subordinate a few years down the line.

Emphasise learning by doing
Dr GL Sharma, advisor: Corporate Interface, Lal Bahadur Shastri Institute of Management, Delhi, emphasises the need for equipping MBAs with practical skills
The aim of management education is to develop managers who are able to manage resources optimally, which leads to lower costs, higher profits and better economic performance. The other objective is to create managers who are sensitive to the needs of society and act in a socially responsible manner. The second objective is often neglected.
With the rising opportunity cost of 2 years of absence from the job and the risk associated with turbulent job markets, the alternate delivery models of MBA are on the rise. These include one year Executive MBA, part-time MBA, online MBA. Even though 2-year MBA still accounts for a large share, educationists must think about alternative delivery models. However, market feedback suggests that mixed models are more acceptable than completely online delivery.
Critics have pointed out that MBA curricula have overstressed on functional knowledge and analytical skills. In additional to the functional and analytical knowledge, we need to equip the MBA with practical skills- like how to hold a meeting, how to give feedback, how to get work done by others, how to lead a team and so on.
Then, the MBA must also develop self-awareness, about how he can influence others and also develop social conscience. In today's global marketplace, a MBA needs to develop 'cultural intelligence' in order to be able to function in different culture, countries. The curriculum should include more project work and 'learning by doing'.
With the accelerated pace of knowledge creation and obsolescence, connect of the B-School with the manager must change. The previous model of B-School as a refuelling station, where you come in once and fill your tank and move on for the rest of your career, needs replacement. The B-School should become a service station, where you come in at regular intervals for a top-up.

The transformation taking place

The transformation taking place

Some of the key aspects that define management education today are quality industry endorsed content, which is relevant to the changing needs of the industry, continuously upgraded curriculum, a mix of practical exposure and classroom training, experienced and qualified faculty, coupled with opportunities for all round development of students to give them a head start in life.
The profile of Indian B-Schools has changed drastically from what it earlier. This transformation is clearly visible across most of the management institutes, because they are competing on par with those abroad.
Most B-Schools either offer residential facilities or are at locations where accommodation is easily available. This also enables them to bring in faculty from abroad with greater frequency, because they can allocate space for putting them up on a regular basis.
Today, management aspirants can evaluate not only the placement opportunity provided by the institute but the overall quality of learning opportunity facilitated by the B-School through holistic personality development.
B-Schools are also actively encouraging an entrepreneurial mindset among students so that each potential manager has the capability to also become a businessman, profit centre and image creator for himself and the company where he/ she is associated with.
While conventional management programs are bound by innumerable limitations, the value addition being provided by B-Schools has substantially enhanced the quality. Obviously the curriculum, teaching and learning process have drastically changed and are now in sync with the fast growing industry needs.
B-Schools have gauged the growing demand of functional areas such as international business, banking and finance, biotech management, shipping and logistics, forex management, SEZ operations, trade policies, global sourcing and globalization, ensuring that management students have sufficient exposure in order to grasp the essentials.

CAT and management courses
Dr Jitendra K Das, director, FORE School of Management, New Delhi, explains how the academic world is reacting to new demands from the business community
The world economy, especially Europe, is giving jitters with every passing day as it tries to come to terms with the universal truth as to how to manage. At the same time India is growing at a healthy rate. This makes India a favourable destination for investments. We at FORE School of Management, New Delhi take this in a positive way as we nurture and produce management talent that will proactively participate in the business as it throws out new challenges.
We pertinently ask the question, how is the academic world reacting to the new demands? All the decisions that a business executive makes culminates in the shaping of the future of the organization as well as the society at large. The manager's ability to take decisions in the best possible manner out of the options available leading to the overall satisfaction of all the stakeholders is what we at FORE consider at the time of facilitating the content of the management programs. This is actually the essence of our guiding principle to make our graduating students relevant to the corporate world.
The Institute's mission is to provide contextual learning that helps in the holistic development of students and help equip them to face the challenges as corporate leaders. At FORE we are driven by employers demand and we shape up our students in such a way that they become more sought after by the recruiters.
The very fact that about three-fourth of the students admitted to FORE have engineering background can be seen as a direct reflection of the impact of successful candidates taking the Common Admission Test (CAT) in general. CAT is one of the strong component in the criteria for admissions to the two-year full time management programs at FORE.
It is generally stated that an MBA education makes a person skillful to get optimum output from limited resources. Though, nature has not given everything in abundance yet we have to optimize our output, so we teach how to get effective business solutions with limited resources.
Today organizations are demanding highly skilled MBA graduates with lots of analytical abilities hence, students must ensure to map it on the requirements of different industries. We at FORE feel that getting jobs at graduation level is useful but feel that candidates must go for management education after getting a work experience of one or two years because it will help them to adapt what is being taught at B-Schools in much better way.
We also expect future MBA aspirants to stay cool and think cool, not to rush to do MBA just because others are doing. The aspirants are motivated to do SWOT analysis for themselves and ensure that they have made themselves up a stuff of hard nut to get ready for cracking at corporate world.
It is very interesting to note that generally there is a very poor connection between CAT Scores and academic performance of a student in PGDM program whether in topline business schools or IIMs. That is, a high CAT scorer is not necessarily always a topper in the PGDM program. The recruiters never look at the CAT Score. So, therefore CAT Score is to be counted as an entry to topline business schools and IIMs, and it is not a score that measures academic depth of students. Therefore, at FORE we are always trying to lower the weightage of CAT score in the selection criteria and include other components for assessing candidates.
