Students who have not made it to their preferred junior colleges need not lose heart.
On Saturday, the last day for those on the first merit list of colleges to secure provisional admission, several junior colleges had between 10% and 50% of their seats vacant. The second general merit list for online admissions will be announced on July 4.
A total of 1.84 lakh seats are available through the online admission process. Till Saturday, around 94,000 seats had been filled. More than 84,000 students have secured admission through offline admissions to the in-house and minority quota seats.
At Sathaye College, Vile Parle, 115 of the 960 seats in science stream, 80 of the 480 commerce seats, and 140 of the 580 arts stream seats were vacant. At St Andrews College, Bandra, 45 of the 108 seats in the science stream, 52 of the 162 commerce seats and 47 of the 108 arts stream seats were vacant.

“Most students have taken provisional admission as they want to be
a part of the online system. But many will withdraw their admission
when they get their preferred college in the betterment option. We will
get a clear picture after the second merit list,” said Manju Nichani,
principal, KC College, where only around 15% of the seats in the three
streams were left vacant.
At Jai Hind College, Chruchgate, 95% of the seats across all streams were filled on Saturday. “The response has been very good and most students had their first preference as Jai Hind College,” said Joyti Thakur, vice principal of the college.
“Cut-offs in the second merit list will go down by just 1%,” said Tukaram Shivare, principal of Hinduja College, Charni Road.
“We will know the number of vacant seats by Monday, when the data is tabulated,” said an education department official.
