Trying to better the education system so students would learn by comprehension and not by rote

Educationist and managing director of VJTF Eduservices Ltd, Dr Vinay Jain believes that it is time to introduce a method of education that is based on comprehension and not on rote. Jain, a motivational speaker and a social activist, says, “What our children need today is the capability to process information. Information is readily available in today’s internet-connected world. It is the institutions’ responsibility to enhance comprehension and application of that information.” His vision for an education system that sensitises the mind and provokes the heart has laid to foundation of a number of institutions and a chain of schools under the name Witty Kids.
Jain has popularised the concept of parenting under his seminars ‘I & My Child’. More than 5,53,000 parents have so far attended and benefited from his programmes across India.
Many schools even today learn things by rote — not really bothering whether students have understood the subject matter and if they can apply it to their life in some shape and form.
Jain wants to introduce several educational reforms in Maharashtra and make it a role model for other states to follow. He believes that it can be done by motivating the education sector to develop the best infrastructure for future generations. Children, according to him, should get exposed to, and experience the best facilities from around the world so that they have a holistic development with a global perspective.
“India needs thought leaders today. I am determined to convince everyone that change is required in our education system and we need to lead and nurture that change. Students who would learn by comprehension and not by rote, who would have a global perspective and would not learn only to do well in the class, but also so that they can apply their knowledge, would steer our state and country in the times to come. Onus is on us to give them a right beginning now,” adds the educationist, who believes all visions for the future must be action-oriented.
