A career in the civil services is considered as the most prestigious. While majority of the candidates these days is going for a career in the private sector for better pay packages, those who want to work in the corridors of power opt for a career in the civil services.
Careers in administrative service, customs and excise, revenue service, police service are the most lucrative.
Those who are interested in pursuing these careers need only to crack the Indian Civil Service Examination. Any Indian citizen between the age of 21 and 30 years with a bachelor’s degree can appear for it.

Conventional Careers

Indian Administrative Service:
The IAS officers are responsible for the management of various administrative departments and their respective functions. This includes framing of policies and acting as advisors to the ministers as well as executing appointed duties as the officers-in-charge of the administration of smaller administrative units.

Indian Police Service:
It is directly responsible for maintaining law and order in all the states. It has the responsibility to look after the safety of the citizens of the country. The Indian Police Service has various branches and associated departments like the Border Security Force, the Department of Home Guards, the Central Bureau of Investigation, the Department of Traffic Control, the Criminal Investigation Department, the Central Reserve Police Force, etc.

Unconventional Careers
Indian Forest Service, Foreign Service, Postal Service and Railway Service
While IAS and IPS are the most popular, there is a lot of scope even in such services. If you love to travel, such services will give you plenty of opportunities. The officials are responsible for the framing of foreign policies as well as maintaining and regulating the Indian embassies in various countries.

India has a huge network of railways. The Indian Railway Service is divided into the Indian Railway Traffic Services, the Indian Railway Personnel Services, the Indian Railway Accounts Services and the Railway Police Service and Railway Police Service.
