FINANCE MASTERS

A management institute in the city has launched a fulltime Master’s of Science in Finance programme. Anishaa Sahijwala reports

An increasing demand for finance professionals with internationally benchmarked skills and capabilities has made it essential to train students who will not only set standards of practice in the finance sector, but also adhere to and support them. Keeping this in mind, Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies (JBIMS) has introduced the Master’s of Science (MSc) in Finance programme.

“There is a demand for skilled finance professionals in new product development, financial risk management, behavioural finance, asset management, banking and non-banking financial institutions management and financial regulations. The MSc in Finance programme, affiliated to the University of Mumbai, is structured to deliver
a strong foundation in the principles and practices of finance, and the analytical tools and skills to form a sound basis for financial decision making,” said Kavita Laghate, director, JBIMS.
>> COURSE DETAILS The two-year course, spread over four semesters and a
foundation course with five subjects each, will give a cursory understanding of accounting and financial reporting, financial management, econometrics and financial modelling, technical analysis, risk management, international finance, etc. Each semester will end with an examination that will be conducted by the university.
Every subject will have two components of evaluation — term work and internal assessment, and a written examination. While 40 per cent of the evaluation will be based on internal assessment, 60 per cent will be based on written examinations.
Since the course lays immense emphasis on practical application, there are two practical subjects in each of the first three semesters. The fourth semester also includes a dissertation based on the research work undertaken by a student.
To be eligible to apply for the course, the candidate must be a graduate in any faculty having scored a minimum of 50 per cent and should have opted for math at the higher secondary level or the first year of his/ her degree course. Furthermore, candidates appearing for their final year graduation examinations can also apply.
Apart from rigorous projects and written examinations, an internship is a mandatory part of the course. At the end of the second semester, students are required to complete a two-month summer internship in an organisation approved by the institute.
“During the course, apart from general teaching, guest lectures will delivered by industry experts. The course is expected to provide employment opportunities to freshers at investment banks, broking firms, private equity entities, insurance companies, credit rating agencies, portfolio management services and venture capital entities,” concludes Laghate.
