SIMPLE STEPS TO EFFECTIVELY MANAGE THE STUDY SCHEDULE FOR A COMPETITIVE EXAM

SIMPLE STEPS TO EFFECTIVELY MANAGE THE STUDY SCHEDULE FOR A COMPETITIVE EXAM

When competitive exams are near, one has to get set to give the best. Here are some tips for easy preparation.
START BEFOREHAND

First of all, avoid making reasons of there being ample time for the exam. Start studying in advance so that you can revise a lot before the exam and it will also ease your pressure at the end moment.
TIMETABLE FOR STUDY

Make a timetable for your study and follow it meticulously. Dedicate enough time for study. Write down the total subjects you have for the exam and dedicate time specifically.
PLAN THE TIMING

While making the timetable, dedicate more time for a subject which is difficult for you. Doing it later or avoiding it might create problems. Hence, start with them and divide the timing alternatively. After finishing a difficult subject, go for a lighter subject so that your brain will find it easy to concentrate and you will love the variations.
STUDY AT A DESK

Avoid studying on a bed. Many
people like to read on the bed while studying. However, one can get easily distracted. Hence, study at a proper desk to ensure that you remain fully alert.
ORGANISE YOUR STUDY While sitting on a chair and table, check that the chair is suitable and does not strain your back. Your posture should be right so that you will be comfortable while studying. Clean your desk thoroughly before studying and make enough space for your notes and books. Remove unwanted items and de-clutter the space as

your mind will feel fresh for study. Ensure that there is enough light.
EASY APPROACH While just mugging up the topic might confuse your mind, follow the right path. Have the habit of writing
down while learning. Highlight the important points of your study on your notepad. While taking notes mark the important points with marker. You can even write down the important formulae and Maths equations on stick-ons and put it on your desk board so that they will always remain in front of you. This way you will find it easy to remember them.
SOLVE MOCK TESTS

This method will boost your confidence. You can tell your elder siblings or parents to set a question paper for you. Set the time according to your exam and solve it accordingly. Avoid any kind of distractions and be true to yourself. This mock test will
help you measure the amount of study you have done and the amount of study you need to do.
TAKE A BREAK

While studying, keep in mind that you need to take a break as well. Taking a break will freshen up your mind. You can take a walk, enjoy your favourite sport in the evening or meet a friend for a chat. However, dedicate the right time for your break in the time table and follow it.
RIGHT FOOD

When exams are near, avoid junk food from outside. Avoid heavy oily food as that can make you lethargic. Eat nutritious homemade food which will keep you fit during the exams. Don't study on an empty stomach or don't eat too much food at one time. Take small amounts of food at regular intervals so that you can concentrate better.
GROUP STUDY

You can invite your friends for studying and help each other in solving difficulties. You can discuss certain study topics and make it easy to understand. However, ensure that you don't divert attention from your study.

IF UNDERSTANDING A DANGEROUS MIND INTRIGUES YOU, FORENSIC SCIENCE IS AN IDEAL FIELD

HAVE A CLUE!

IF UNDERSTANDING A DANGEROUS MIND INTRIGUES YOU, FORENSIC SCIENCE IS AN IDEAL FIELD

Forensic science is primarily concerned with the application of scientific principles for the investigation of crime. Using the very latest in technology, forensic scientists convert the clues collected from a crime scene into evidence admissible in a court of law. It is the use or application of science in courts or legal proceedings. This is a challenging and interesting field for those who have are inquisitive and loves adventure.
Forensic Science is essentially a crime laboratory-based profession. The course qualifies students to apply their knowledge of science to the investigation of crime. But the expertise of a forensic professional is also used in civil cases for issues like proving the validity of a signature on a will, to a claim of the products liability, to find out whether an industry is complying with environmental rules.
The scientists analyse all physical evidence found on a victim on the scene of a crime and compare it to evidence found on a suspect and provide expert testimony in a court of law. The evidences might include traces of blood, saliva, other body fluids, hair, fingerprints, footwear and tyre impressions, explosives, specimens of tissue for poisons, blood and urine for alcohol etc. Their expertise lies in the determination of facts using these
evidences. They have to prepare a report of their investigation and appear in the court to give evidence. They work closely with the police to provide scientific evidence that is admissible in the court.
Forensic science is not a discipline or branch of science, but is a catch-all for many distinct disciplines. It is broadly grouped into three: Medical, laboratory and field science.
Forensic/career/options/forensic/datamedicine is a broad medical subject which includes forensic pathology, psychiatry, psychology, forensic medicine and odontology
(dentistry). Laboratory sciences include chemistry, biology, toxicology, ballistics, fingerprints, questioned documents and marks and impressions. Field sciences include crime scene investigation which incorporates areas such as fire and explosion scenes and clandestine drug laboratories.
Candidates with a background in Science subjects can pursue a career in forensic science. One can do graduation in forensic science (i. e B.Sc. Forensic Science) after 10+2. After graduation they can take up diploma courses in Forensic Science and Criminology which is of one year duration. To take up a Masters
course in forensic science you need to be a graduate preferably with a first division in Physics, chemistry, Zoology, Botany, Biochemistry, Microbiology, B.pharm, BDS or applied science.
To become a specialist who conducts post-mortems on dead bodies to find out the cause of death, you must first secure an MBBS degree and then go for an MD in Forensic Science. All Indian Universities that offer MBBS courses also offer an MD in Forensic Science.
For Research : Indian nationals below 30 years and who have obtained 1st class marks in Master's degree in any one of the subjects : Physics / Chemistry / Biochemistry / Anthropology / Zoology / Molecular Biology / Maths (with Physics as one of the subjects at the bachelor degree level) / Biotechnology / Microbiology / Computer Science / Computer Engineering / Forensic Psychology etc. or M.Phil in the same subjects whichever is the essential qualification for the award of Ph.D degree of a recognised Indian University.
Personal attributes: An inquisitive nature and a concern for accuracy is the main attribute required to be in this field. They must have keen observation, intelligence, an eye for detail, ability to work along with a team, a logical, practical and methodical approach. An aptitude for scientific analysis is essential.

JOB PROSPECTS

They can find employment with law enforcement agencies, police, legal system and in the investigative services of the government and also private agencies. They can also work as teachers in institutes that conduct courses in this subject.
Opportunities for forensic scientists exist in government organisations such as the Intelligence Bureau (IB), the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and as investigative officers in the crime cells of state police forces. Forensic experts essentially work in forensic labs and sometimes even in large private detective agencies to establish the link between the criminal and the crime.
CAREER OPTIONS

There are variety of options for forensic professionals. They can specialise in subjects as varied as medicine, engineering, fingerprinting, insect study, languages, geology etc.
Crime Scene Investigation: Scene investigation involves issues such as security, prevention of contamination, locating and collecting relevant items of evidence, interpretation of evidence and possible reconstruction of the event. Scenes can range from a relatively simple house break to a fire in a multi-storey building or a city bombing.

They receive both Bocconi's Master of Science and a graduate degree (usually a Master of Science) from the partner institution.

A further opportunity for international study is offered by the CEMS Global Alliance in Management Education, of which Bocconi is a founding member. An exclusive CEMS MIM diploma is awarded to graduates of this program, in addition to Bocconi's Master of Science in Management or International Management..
An internship is compulsory for Master of Science programs and is part of the study plan.
Bocconi is looking for well-rounded students with diverse knowledge and skills. International applicants are selected on the basis of a process that takes into consideration all elements of their profile, looking at three components: evaluation of the candidate's dossier, Grade Point Average of
exams passed in the undergraduate program and the results of the GMAT / GRE test.
They offer various kinds of scholarships to International students,
need-based (Bocconi Scholarship) and merit-based (Bocconi Merit Awards).

Extract | E.A.T. to know yourself better An aptitude test that decodes the drives or inhibitions in the journey from entrepreneurship to leadership

Heart, Smarts, Guts, And Luck—What It Takes to Be an Entrepreneur And Build a Great Business: By Anthony K. Tjan, Richard J. Harrington and Tsun-yan Hsieh, Harvard Business Review, 236 pages, Rs795.
Heart, Smarts, Guts, And Luck—What It Takes to Be an Entrepreneur And Build a Great Business: By Anthony K. Tjan, Richard J. Harrington and Tsun-yan Hsieh, Harvard Business Review, 236 pages, Rs795.

Self-awareness is a lesson that’s advocated not only by spiritual leaders and motivational speakers but by management gurus and business schools as well. If you know what drives you and where your strength comes from, you naturally make a better leader, take wiser decisions and instinctively become better at business-building. Entrepreneurs Anthony K. Tjan, Richard J. Harrington and Tsun-yan Hsieh identify and discuss four traits—“heart”, “smarts”, “guts” and “luck” (HSGL)—found in most entrepreneurs, and how they operate from those drivers, in their book Heart, Smarts, Guts And Luck—What It Takes to Be an Entrepreneur And Build a Great Business. The book comes with an Entrepreneurial Aptitude Test (E.A.T.), a tool to determine your profile—whether you are “heart-dominant” or your gut decisions are more often right than wrong, whether your sharp, discerning thinking gets you by, or whether you are plain lucky. Interestingly, the authors use the words she and her throughout the “Heart” and “Smarts” chapters and he and him in the “Guts” and “Luck” chapters.
The authors themselves have been on a journey —from entrepreneurship to leadership, to now advising CEOs and being venture capitalists. Tjan is managing partner of the Boston-based venture
capital firm Cue Ball; Harrington is its chairman. Prior to Cue Ball, Harrington was CEO of Thomson Corp. and played a role in transforming it to Thomson Reuters, the largest information services company in the world. Hsieh has over 30 years’ experience as a senior director of McKinsey and chairman of LinHart Group.
The three experts discuss the powerful cocktail of HSGL in a concluding chapter. Though no single archetype ensures entrepreneurial success, yet knowing yourself will help you “dial up” certain traits and “dial down” others. The authors encourage you to take the more complete survey online at www.hsgl.com, as it will deliver a more accurate assessment and tabulate your results right away. Edited excerpts:
The E.A.T. (Entrepreneurial Aptitude Test) Survey
photo
For each pair of statements, choose the one that feels the most true to you by filling in the circle. After completing each page, count the shaded circles along each of the four lines on the page, entering each sum in the end boxes.
Interpreting Your Results
How did you come out? What does it mean for you as an entrepreneur or business-builder? Were you surprised with the results? Are you strongest in Heart? Perhaps you have the common profile of a relatively even split between Guts and Smarts, but relatively lower in Heart and Luck? Or are you that Luck-driven person who seems to have just the right disposition and outlook that can take you far? You can flip back to chapter 1 for a quick review of the four traits. Remember that the taxonomy of traits in a given individual is never an either/or situation. In our experience, successful business-builders have all four characteristics in abundance, yet most people do tend to lead with either one trait as their dominant characteristic, or with a fusion of any two of the HSGL traits. This simplified book version of the test is more useful for seeing if you are immediately dominant in any one area. The online version at www.HSGL.com displays your percentage distribution of each trait as well as comparisons between your results and the rest of our research database. HSGL is most important as a framing mechanism for self-awareness.
The E.A.T. survey, while an important data input to our research and yours, should not be viewed as the sole predictor of who you are. Just as any test or survey—SAT, GMAT, Myers-Briggs, or Predictive Index, to name a few—can serve as informative proxies of scholastic aptitude, working style, or motivational management preferences, they still would not be used on their own to admit students to schools or hire and manage employees. At least, they shouldn’t be!
The E.A.T. survey is purposely not labeled the “HSGL Survey” because while it contributes to the HSGL self-awareness picture, it is not the picture in and of itself. Use this diagnostic survey as a lens to approach the material in this book and help guide your own self-reflection about where you are and where you want to be when it comes to business-building potential. As this research is an ongoing work in progress, we’d also love to get your input on how the E.A.T. survey could be expanded or improved and certainly would like your help in passing on the online version to other business-builders.

US calling

Who completed her Bachelor’s of Fine Arts from Rhode Island School of Design, speaks about her experience as an Indian student in the United States

I recently graduated with a Bachelor’s of Fine Arts, from
the Rhode Island School of Design, having had a most
unique experience, enriched with interesting and absurd
conversations with intense artists and professors.
My first observation was that the country is home to a large number of students, each with a clearly defined personality, and style. Every person I spoke to had a separate way of interpreting situations. The environment here at US, encourages constant discussion and debate, not only during class hours but also while having meals and sitting out in the sun with friends. There is always opportunity to learn about something you never hoped to have existed.
Apart from this, the student-professor relationship in the US is a little more casual than how it is in India. Professors are always open to argument. I would question my professors often, if I didn't agree with a comment they made. My peers would step in, adding interesting view points. Class discussion sometimes go into frenzy, and end up talking about topics that were far from what we originally started with! Another point of difference is that students here refer to professors by first name. This reduces the student-professor hierarchy. It is almost like speaking with a friend, bearing in mind that he/ she has authority.
While interacting with people, I realised that they do not know much about India. One would imagine that art students in a highly accomplished art school would have heard of MF Hussain. To my surprise, however, not many non-Indians had heard of him. This difference in culture gives Indian students the chance to spend a lot of time educating friends, exposing them to images of work by famous Indian artists and making them watch Bollywood music videos. As an Indian, studying outside the country, I strongly believe that it is very important for us to make others aware of our great lineage.
Apart from spending time with friends, work hours at school are extremely intense. In fact, one would spend most of their time with each other while at school. Since I went to an art school, we spent 90 per cent of our time in the ‘studio’. There was thus, little time for entertainment. For me, and most other students here, entertainment was catching meals with classmates, taking a nap and spending time with friends on a Friday or Saturday night. We rarely went for movies or excursions.
The only tough adjustment that Indian students have to make is the weather. I hail from Bangalore, which is beautiful all year round. It is never too hot or too cold, always just perfect! In the East Coast, however, the cold is far beyond what students can usually handle. Indian students usually hate the cold, and snow that accompanied it. It definitely takes a while to adjust. However, with the right clothes, and time, one gets used to it. Most importantly, if you love what you are studying, you gradually learn to live with it and sometimes, even enjoy the snow. That is exactly how I dealt with it.
To end with, for those who are entering the unknown college world, be excited, eager and curious. Take classes which contain subjects that you have never engaged with before. Make lots of friends and don't be afraid to debate and argue, for you will always have something new to learn.

US: NUMBER OF INDIAN STUDENTS DECLINE

According to the 2012 Open Doors Report released recently, the number of Indian students heading to the US for studies continues to decline.

The popularity of the US as a study destination for Indian students seems to be dwindling. According to the 2012 Open Doors Report released recently, the number of Indian students heading to institutions in the US for studies continues to witness a decline for the second consecutive year. This, in spite of
the fact that the number of international students at colleges and universities in the US increased by 6.5 per cent to 764,495 during 2011-12. At 100,270, this academic year witnessed a 3.5 per cent decline in the number of Indian students heading to US institutes than 2010-2011.
However, in spite of this, India
continues to be the second leading place of origin (China holds the foremost position) for students going to the US. Of the total percentage of Indian students, who went to the US for studies in 2011-2012, 58.9 per cent went to pursue graduate level studies, 13 per cent undergraduate level, 26.7 per cent OPT (optional practical training) and 1.5 per cent went to study other programmes including non degree courses.
With 37.7 per cent, 21.7 per cent, and 14.1 per cent of the total Indian students enrolling for engineering, math/ computer science, and business/ management respectively, the three fields are the most popular
streams of study among Indian students in the US. According to the report, students from India make up approximately 13.1 per cent of the total foreign student population in the United States.
The Open Doors Report on International Educational Exchange is published annually by the Institute
of International Education in partnership with the US Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. It provides the most comprehensive data and analysis available on international students studying in the US and Americans studying abroad.

If combating malware, hackers and cyber crimes are your passion, this is the right time to be a cyber security expert.

CYBER WARRIOR

If combating malware, hackers and cyber crimes are your passion, this is the right time to be a cyber security expert.

True that the World Wide Web has bonded its numerous netizens into a virtual village, but it has also led to incidents of hacking, data thefts and virus attacks. India faced a
severe test during the 2010 Commonwealth Games when cyber attacks from Pakistan and China sought to damage information systems. What’s more, cyber strikes originating from Eastern Europe and countries like the US, China, Russia and Iran have attacked Indian domains lately.
Amidst this cloud of cyber crimes, there is a silver lining that comes in the form of job opportunities for students in the field of information security. Recognising the dearth of trained cyber security experts, the Indian government has expanded the career prospects in this field by announcing to train 5 lakh cyber warriors in the next five years to boost e-defense. A government-private sector plan, this initiative aims at beefing up India’s cyber security, as we face a shortfall of 4.7 lakh such experts, despite our reputation of being an IT and software powerhouse. The government also intends to introduce specialised cyber security-related curriculum in engineering and management courses and establish Institute of Cyber Security Professionals of India.
SECURITY STATS Contrary to the importance given to
network security and threat prevention in countries like the UK, US and China, India is lagging behind in identifying the need for this scarce skillset. “The rising spate of cyber attacks has alerted government and private organisations, thus generating a huge demand for information security professionals to safeguard and monitor their network and systems,” says GM Ajit, director, National Institute of Electronics and Information Technology, Calicut.
“Be it an organisation or an individual, everybody wants to ensure the safety of their system, thus, relying heavily on information security experts. Government departments and security agencies too demand large number of cyber security professionals, says Parul Khanna, a certified ethical hacker. As per indus-
Be it an organisation or an individual, everybody wants to ensure the safety of their system
try experts, job opportunities in this field have outnumbered trained professionals. According to Angad Paul, director, Appin Technology, Noida, a lab that works in the field of information security, “IT security with ethical hacking skills is the most promising career to be in, with challenges and excitement every day of the work. There is a huge shortage of IT security manpower, only 60,000 professionals are available with respect to lakhs of jobs in IT security field in India.”

CYBER SAFE Elaborating on the skill-set required to succeed in the field of information security, Bezawada Bruhadeshwar, assistant professor, International Institute of Information Technology, Hyder
abad, says, “It’s a field that requires your keen interest, professional training and thorough knowledge of operating systems, programming, networks and protocols. Cyber criminals strike through virus attacks, destroy systems, modify and steal data from your system without your knowledge. The first and foremost job as an information security expert are to detect and analyse the vulnerabilities and then plug the loopholes to protect the system, network and data. Cyber security experts need to know about coding of some basic languages and database handling skills.”
DIVERSE DOMAIN If you are a trained professional in this field, you can find placement as network security systems manager, network secu
rity administrator, network security engineer, web security administrator, web security auditor, application security tester, ethical hacker, information security analyst, database and software developer, data security specialist, and chief information security officer.
An information security specialist can also start his own venture to provide security solutions to a variety of companies and government departments. Cyber security experts are a desired lot in banks, energy sector, hotels, airlines, healthcare, telecom companies, infrastructure, transportation, law enforcement, defence, emergency response systems and ITES companies, among others.
CERTIFIED CAREER Graduates with a degree in computer science or engineering can opt for various full-time and short-term courses in information security, like MTech and MSc in Information Security, degree and diplomas in information security and network administration. Khanna says, “You need
to be trained and certified from a reputed organisation. International certifications like Certified Ethical Hacker (EC-Council) and GPEN can do wonders to one’s career as a cyber security expert. Salaries in this field range from Rs 3 to 5 lakh per annum. With experience and desired expertise, the package may go up to 10-12 lakh per annum, and even to a crore.”
INSTITUTE INDICATOR Though India is yet to have any university catering to ethical hacking or information security courses, there are several institutes, colleges and private labs, which impart courses and short-term programmes on cyber security. University of Madras, International Institute of Information Technology, Hyderabad, Institute of Information Security, NIELIT and SRM University are some of the institutes that offer programmes in this field. Hacking evangelist Ankit Fadia also offers certification and training course on ethical hacking.

Unemployment may be just as bad for heart as smoking

Unemployment may be just as bad for heart as smoking

Did you know that losing a job repeatedly could be just as bad for your heart as smoking, high blood pressure, or diabetes? An extensive study analysed cases of more than 13,000
adults between the ages of 50 and 75 and followed them for 18 years.
The researchers found a strong link between job loss and heart attack risk that increased with each succes
sive period of unemployment. The difference in heart risk between someone who has never lost a job and someone who has lost four or more was found to be the same as that between someone who smokes and someone who doesn’t, or someone with diabetes and someone without.
The results showed that after one job loss, heart attack
risk was about 22% greater for the unemployed than it was for those still working. And to make things worse, by the time a participant had experienced four or more periods of unemployment, the risk was 63% greater. The study did adjust for other heart attack risk factors, and found that overall, unemployed people have a 35% greater risk of heart attacks than people who were employed. Previous studies have also shown a link, but this is one of the longest-term studies ever done, and was thus able to show how multiple job losses can affect health.

‘A leader is like a shepherd

‘A leader is like a shepherd’

As a leader I have always endeavoured to listen to what each and every person in a discussion had to say before venturing my own opinion. Oftentimes, my own opinion will simply represent a consensus of what I heard in the discussion.
I always remember the axiom: a leader is like a shepherd. He stays behind the flock, letting the most nimble go out ahead, whereupon the others follow, not realizing that all along they are being directed from behind.
I learned that courage was not the absence of fear but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear.
As I have said, the first thing is to be honest with yourself. You can never have an impact on society if you have not changed yourself. Great peacemakers are all people of integrity, of honesty but humility.
- Excerpted from the ‘Long Walk to Freedom’ by the former South African president, Nelson Mandela

‘A leader listens to, respects others’ opinions’ Alessandro Benetton

‘A leader listens to, respects others’ opinions’

Alessandro Benetton, the recently appointed heir of the Italian clothing and accessories major, the Benetton Group, aims to act like the “conductor of an orchestra” for the organisation, which is trying to make a seamless transition to the second generation. Amid a deepening European crisis, the new chairman is considered tough enough to introduce bold changes in product and strategy to revive the sinking business. The son of Luciano Benetton, founder of the group, Alessandro set up his own private equity firm — active in the private equity field in Italy and France, with assets of over €1.3 billion — before joining the family group. A Harvard alumnus, Alessandro started his career with Goldman Sachs International, as a mergers and acquisitions analyst.
What is leadership for you?
I believe the role of leadership today should be one of guidance. A leader must not only take responsibility for decision-making, but also create organisations in which knowledge is widespread, so people can work together to build value and develop the business.
Who inspires you?
First Luciano, for his driving innovation and far-sightedness. And also the American management guru, Michael Porter, my mentor at Harvard, where I received my MBA education. Good role models are very important, though you have to be able to find your own way in life and have the courage to be yourself.
The euro zone is under pressure, the economy is sinking. How do you handle the bad economic scenario, especially when your performance is constantly being watched?
It’s important, in my opinion, to view this period of crisis not least as an opportunity to rethink and improve our system so that we’ll be ready and prepared when economic conditions improve. It’s at times of discontinuity such as these that companies like ours can reflect on their position and launch a new business direction. It’s also true, unfortunately, that society today is used to expecting results in the very short term, whereas generating solutions to more complex organisational issues requires planning and a greater amount of time.
Is there a difference in the style of a leadership for those who manage a family business and for those who lead an organisation on a salaried basis?
There may be a difference in the passion for your work, which, in the case of a family business, is felt as a manifestation of a business culture that you have always been part of. Having roots and traditions is important to help you look to the future and create new chapters in your story.
What is the best leadership decision that you have taken so far?
Only time will tell if a decision was a good one or not. In this regard, I think delisting was a major step for the future of Benetton Group. We decided to delist from the Milan stock exchange to avoid a routine mind-set and realign this aspect, too, to fit the long-term perspective in which we operate.
..And your worst decision?
I wouldn’t be a very shrewd leader if I were to admit one…
Being a leader of a giant apparel fashion house, how do you keep yourself updated about on fashion around the globe — especially in countries like India with reserved cultures?
Apart from my personal interest, which makes me an attentive observer of trends, I travel around the world to get a sense of the up-coming fashion and lifestyle trends of young people. Life is one of our sources of inspiration, as are the arts, architecture and the web. They are all expressions of an increasingly global, interconnected world with which we have established a solid relationship. Regarding India, during my recent trip there I perceived a great enthusiasm for looking to the future, with far more confidence and energy than ever before.
You are both a Harvard graduate and the heir of a family run business. Do you think leadership runs in one’s DNA or can be learnt in MBA institutes?
I think everything is talent , it’s partly innate, and the rest is down to learning, commitment and a lot of hard work. And, being aware that a day you learnt something new is a day well spent.
Are you open to debates on your decisions with your co-workers?
Sharing, and respecting others’ opinions are fundamental teamwork values. It’s important to listen to one’s co-workers’ comments and opinions. Then, you can decide on your priorities according to your conscience and competence.
What is your leadership mantra?
I think there’s more than one. Firstly, leadership consists of the ability to make decisions and shoulder responsibility. Secondly, as I said before, it is also the ability to create organisations that generate ideas and creativity. Then, the capacity to work in a team and making teamwork a vital tool to manage an increasingly complex business world.

All companies, whether they seek to make profit or work on a non-profit basis, need to have an ethical framework

VALUE-CREATION, A TOP PRIORITY

All companies, whether they seek to make profit or work on a non-profit basis, need to have an ethical framework

There is an underlying goal to be achieved, and it is fundamental that this be more than earning money and growing in size, else creating value is deprioritised.
It is an unfortunate scenario that we often see senior executives unaware of the company's mission statement. In the few cases that they have encountered it, they are vague about the underlying principles of the very foundation their business is based on.
In large teams, it is necessary to constantly unite individuals, so that their work is complementary to one another, working in tandem to achieve this greater purpose. It is thus recommended that the vision of the company be communicated often, as it is only too easy to run behind daily targets and deadlines without answering the essential questions of why and how. If we take the example of the armed forces, it is clear that all the soldiers are very passionate about the goal of the organisation. Even with the possibility of death, there is no fear. There is only efficiency, bravery and selflessness. This passion is a fruit of wanting to protect a nation, which is the goal of any army.
The difference between a good company and a great company is a hardworking workforce that is passionate about their job. Here are some guidelines for achieving this:
>> DECISION-MAKING: When making a decision of any magnitude, apart from looking at typical factors like risk, potential revenue or growth, managers must question themselves regarding how this decision is helping achieve the company’s mission statement. Can it be modified to meet the same? There should be respect and appreciation to this; else there is little point in having a vision;
>> PEOPLE: Employees bring with themselves four kinds of actions when they come to work. The first and only involuntary one is their body, or physical being. The other three, however, are involuntary.
These are: passion, talent and energy. Employees use these in a shrewd fashion, as they are also termed to be ‘discretionary’ energies. A clear vision that invites their use is a great motivator, as it unlocks levels of motivation that reduce the share of salary, replacing it with them seeing a change with significant effects and their individual contribution to it.
>> COMMUNICATION OF CAUSE: Great work by employees is typically a result of motivation. It is the desire to find one's role in an office of merit that drives groundbreaking projects and thoughts. While managers can provide the shepherding, the direction must come from the mission of the organisation. Hence, to have employees internalise it, this must be communicated not only on various occasions, but with energy and clarity.
>> UNITY: The synchronisation of teams is a great asset. With land, labour and machine being key assets in the 20th century, the new millennium laid an emphasis on innovation in business. People are the key to this, and therefore must be aligned to the same page. The company's vision is the guiding light to this, and therefore essential and indispensable.
A company comprises of people, and all individuals ought to prioritise and focus. The scale to do so in the context of an organisation is even greater, as people work in bigger teams and on tight schedules, where they often need to be reminded of the bigger picture, or the organisational focus.

younger Indian CEOs are paid more than their US counterparts

YOUNG CEOs, A COSTLY AFFAIR?

According to a recent report, younger Indian CEOs are paid more than their US counterparts. explores this trend

The younger breed of CEOs in India Inc is here for the long haul and proving its mettle by beating its western counterparts in the compensation game. A recent report by Randstad Executive Search, ‘Compensation of Corporate Indian CEOs’, a comparative study done to provide insights into the current trends of salaries among CEOs, says that younger CEOs are paid more in India than their US counterparts. The average annual salary of an Indian
CEO below the age of 50 now stands at Rs 7.9 crore. Compared to Rs 7.3 crore that American corner office occupants earn and Rs 7.8 crore pocketed by European bosses, it highlights the rising salaries of younger CEOs, especially in promoter-run firms in India.
So, why are the younger CEOs in India at this advantage? Which factors are driving this trend? According to E Balaji, MD & CEO, Randstad India, “The first generation promoters are passing on the CEO mantle to

their heirs and other family members. These young promoter CEOs are compensated higher and closer to their global peers. This trend is evident in the manufacturing and energy and infrastructure segments. We have seen the role of the CEO gaining prominence in the last decade. Indian companies face increasing global competition and are looking at expanding beyond India. There is a demand for high-performing CEOs from across sectors. This has impacted CEO compensation positively.”
GC Jayaprakash, client partner & APAC technology leader, Stanton Chase International shares, “The survey findings are more relevant in the case of promoter CEOs rather than professional ones. The promoter CEOs in India get paid more than their US counterparts. Today, many of the promoter families have brought in their young family members into key executive roles at high compensation levels. The younger lot (most of them with Ivy school degrees) has been doing a good job with some exceptions.” He further adds that while this trend cuts across all sectors, it is more prevalent in manufacturing, automotive,
infrastructure, healthcare and pharma life sciences, hospitality and realty industries.
Similarly, Sunil Goel, director, GlobalHunt India Pvt. Ltd feels that there is a higher risk appetite of the young CEOs in the country, which in turn, gives them high returns in terms of salaries. “Younger CEOs in India are showing their ability to understand complex business problems; they are able to cope up with setbacks and failures; are coming up with practical solutions; are adaptable to change; and can bring radical and positive changes to the business,” he adds.
However, Dhruv Shringi, CEO and co-founder, Yatra.com disagrees, “It’s a predetermined notion that Indian CEOs are being paid more. If we look at the Indian scenario, 80 per cent of the CEOs are offsprings of entrepreneurs. Only this bunch of CEOs is drawing well-heeled salaries and this is to create a benchmark.”
While this is one positive side of the coin, the study also states that while younger Indian CEOs may have stolen a march over their global peers in the salary sweepstakes; overall, Indian CEO salaries are substantially lower than
their international counterparts. Indian CEOs received an average salary of Rs 6.3 crore. The compensation of Indian CEOs, though growing sharply, is still 45 per cent lower than their American peers and 21 per cent lower than European CEOs. However, the gap in salaries when compared to European CEOs is shrinking faster. Hence, the question that arises is - why are younger CEOs beating their western counterparts while the other CEOs still lag behind? “Though many Indian companies hire a professional CEO, there is always a family member (from the next generation) around playing a larger role in the company affairs,” states Jayaprakash.
Hence, it is a positive sign that more and more Indian CEOs are getting compensated at world-class levels. This only proves that with the growing complexities in business, compensations will certainly rise further.
