--Sreshtha A degree is awarded by a university while a diploma is the qualification given by an educational institute which need not be a university. Often the programme in both cases may be similar but the title of the qualification is different. The IIM award PG diplomas in business management which are considered of a higher value than similar credentials offered by universities.
Moreover, there are institutes such as the National Institute of Design, one of the best of its kind in India, which gives diplomas for most of its programmes. So, it is often the course and institutes that give one credential more value than another, and not necessarily the nomenclature.
