Management Training: The German Dual System
“It has not only been 25 years of delivering skills through high dedication, global-level training quality and German perfection; it is about sparking enthusiasm, self-confidence and pride in the students and paving their way onto the labour market with best prospects.”
— Dr. Martin Ney, Ambassador to India, Federal Republic of Germany, New Delhi
The Indo-German business community in India has collaborated with the Indo-German Training Centre (IGTC) to conduct a flagship 18-month, full-time Post Graduate Programme in Business Administration (PGPBA) based on the famed German Dual Education System. Through this program, 1 year of theoretical learning at IGTC is interlocked with 6 months of hands-on practical training at a partnering Germanorganisation. This German Dual Education System is one of the cornerstones of the successful brand “Made in Germany”, which enables German organizations to be industrial leaders known for their technical expertise, precision and perfection.
IGTC is the management training division of the Indo-German Chamber of Commerce in Mumbai, Bengaluru and Chennai. It is partnered with many German organizations including Bajaj Allianz, BASF, Bayer, Bosch, Deutsche Bank, DHL Express, Dr. Oetker, Häfele, Hella, Kärcher, LANXESS, Mercedes-Benz, Schaeffler, Siemens Limited, Volkswagen among others. Admission to IGTC is offered only to those deserving applicants that are interviewed and selected by German organisations during the unique Trainee Selection Process in June every year.
The PGPBA is then anchored in a general management curriculum that is structured to take trainees through the complete spectrum of business education. It is taught by world-class faculty from industry and academia, who adopt diverse pedagogic approaches such as lectures, presentations, individual and group assignments, case studies and business simulations to enhance the learning experience.
The practical training is customized according to the company’s posttraining absorption requirements in various functional areas. This enables the organisation to critically examine and judge the trainee’s capabilities, potential and suitability before committing employment. Trainees, in turn, gain exposure to German processes, practices and work culture through live projects. Under the guidance of industry mentors, they learn to work responsibly, personally develop themselves, apply their classroom learning to industry projects and become practical solution providers in the corporate arena.
The PGPBA also gives continuous attention to competency building and soft skill development. All trainees complete the Start Deutsche A1 level of German language from the Goethe-Institut (Max Mueller Bhavan). The Best Performing Student is felicitated with the Dr. Günter Krüger Award for Excellence, which gives the student an opportunity to study German with the Goethe-Institut in Germany. Needbased and merit-based scholarships are awarded to students by Siemens and Bayer. The programme is certified by the Indo-German Chamber of Commerce (IGCC).
The strength of the PGPBA programme is that it is not only studentfocused, but employer-focused. It gives the partnering companies the opportunity to adopt a trainee and groom them personally and professionally, toward their career and organizational goals. The personalized learning environment lends itself to a close interaction between the student, the IGTC administration, faculty and training heads of partnering companies. Both, the training companies and the trainees, develop and nurture a relationship based on mutual understanding, thereby making it an ideal and sustainable bond for the future.
“IGTC’s ability to consistently produce holistic managerial talent is reaffirmed by its successful placement record. Training companies are given the first preference to recruit their respective trainees. If the training process does not culminate into a meaningful placement, the trainees are assisted with the process of applying to various other organisations. The success of the 1500+ IGTC alumni in multinational organisations is the best yardstick for excellence. Undoubtedly, the IGTC model stands as a success story of the much sought after industry-academia model in education”, quotes Director Radhieka R Mehta.
“IGTC was a unique concept in 1991 and believe it or not it continues to be a unique concept 30 years later, where you combine education with real life experiences and real life practices. From a Siemens perspective, IGTC graduates are in senior positions in our organisation. Two of them are CFOs of our largest businesses in the country, and one of them is our Deputy Head of Strategy”, shares Sunil Mathur, MD & CEO, Siemens Ltd.
