IIT-B faculty says admission to the institute should have different criteria

Even the recent IITB (IIT Bombay) senate meeting saw strong opposition to the 40% weightage given to board marks, with the faculty calling it an unfair process, considering the ambiguity among different boards - international, national and state level. A senate member said, “Traditionally, board marks have been a criterion for admission to IITs, demanding that students score enough in the boards. This required score can be increased in the reformed JEE pattern. But using a candidate’s board examination score for ranking will be unfair.” Another member said, “Different boards have varied examination and evaluation patterns. Also the board examinations are mostly theory-based, where rote-learning can help, whereas competitive tests are application-based.” A special seven-member committee constituted by the HRD minister is meeting faculty members of the IITB at the institute on Monday, and will make a presentation on the reformed JEE. The committee will then hear suggestions and objections from the faculty. “More than 10 lakh candidates appear for the AIEEE (All India Engineering Entrance Test) compared to the five-six lakhs appearing for the JEE. This indicates that there are many students who are keen to do engineering, but not necessarily keen to join IIT. Considering this gap, there is also a difference in the difficulty levels,” pinpointed another senate member. There is also talk about waiting another year before implementing the reformed JEE pattern, since the system is not yet ready to allow candidates enough time to prepare. |
