Counselling for Career-14

Q.
I am in Class 12. Though I have no interest in maths, I am still required to study it. I am interested in law. How do I get admission in a good college? Which are the best law colleges in India? — Yogesh

A.
After completing Class 12, you can take up law by pursuing a five-year integrated BA LLB programme or a three-year postgraduate, LLB programme. Admission to the five-year BA LLB is through an entrance test (Common Law Admission Test, or CLAT), after Class 12 in any stream. Some good law institutes offering the five-year programme are National Law School of India University (www.nls.ac.in); WB National University of Juridical Sciences (www.nujs.edu); NALSAR University of Law (www.nalsarlawuniv.org); National Law University (www.nlujodhpur.ac.in); National Law Institute University, (www.nliu.com) and several others. Some institutes such as Amity Law School, Symbiosis Law School and the National Law University, have their own entrance tests. There is an all-India test for admission to NLU. Practically all universities in the country offer the three-year LLB. For a detailed list of institutes and information on the law entrance test, you may visit www.clat.in. Maths as a subject in Class 12 is useful for law because this career requires strong reasoning and analytical skills. The entrance tests covers questions on general knowledge, general English, analytical abilities, legal awareness, aptitude for legal studies etc. You can prepare for the tests by working on sample papers (readily available in career hand-books), building up your English vocabulary through lots of extra reading (especially daily newspapers, political and business magazines etc), and being aware of current affairs. Several websites and coaching institutes help students prepare for the law entrance.  =========================================================
Q.
I wish to become a clinical psychologist. Which career is better — psychology or physiotherapy? — Riya

A.
While you can study psychology after Class 12 in any stream, science is necessary for a degree or diploma course in physiotherapy. Clinical psychology is concerned with the assessment, diagnosis, treatment and prevention of mental disorders. It includes child mental health, adult mental health, dealing with substance abuse, geriatrics, health psychology, learning disabilities and emotional disturbances. Clinical psychologists work in medical settings as well as in schools and with non-government organisations. Physiotherapy primarily deals with movement dysfunction. It involves the assessment, maintenance, and restoration of the body’s physical functions for optimal health. Like other paramedical professionals, physiotherapists work in hospitals and clinics. They usually work in orthopaedic and rehabilitation departments, and are being increasingly employed in neurology, paediatrics, cardio-thoracic, and even prenatal and antenatal care departments. Their demand in medical institutions is growing because physiotherapy plays an important role in the treatment of patients with muscular and cerebral problems. As every career has its own profile and eligibility requirements, you must consider the long-term needs associated with your choice and then decide which one is suitable for you.  =========================================================
Q.
I am a Class 12 student under the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE). I have “physical education” as an additional subject. Can it be used to calculate the best-of-four percentage for admission to commerce courses in Delhi University? — Abhinav

A.
A pass in Class 12 requires you to clear exams in five subjects, of which colleges note the best four to decide on admissions. This means four academic subjects including English. The fifth subject can be a vocational subject or physical education. For admission to a commerce programme, you should have any four academic subjects, preferably economics, business studies and accounts with English. Physical education is not counted. Moreover, for a BCom (H) programme you are required to have taken maths as a subject in your Class 12 board exams. Only when you are applying for a course which requires the expertise of the vocational subject are the marks taken into account for the best four subjects. So, if you are applying for a bachelor’s in physical education, one of the subjects for the best-of-four percentage can be physical education.
