Counselling for Career-21

Q.
I am a final-year BCA student (evening session) from a reputable university. Should I become a systems analyst or get into the information technology (IT) security line? — Sonam

A.
Computer systems analysts, database administrators, networking and IT security jobs are among the fastest growing and will continue to be so for many years to come. This is because the IT sector continues to expand and there will, therefore, be a continuing need to build skills in these areas. The choice between a systems analyst and IT security will depend on your inclination towards these jobs. While a systems analyst determines an organisation’s needs and designs programmes to meet them, computer security jobs entail protecting computer systems from illegal intrusions, viruses, data theft, fraud, or other forms of tampering. With a BCA degree, you can work in either of these areas. If you are technically sound in IT and abreast of the technological changes then a career in the IT sector can certainly open up expanding career opportunities. A three-year MCA or a certification programme offered by companies like Oracle or Microsoft will enable you to increase your career prospects in the field of choice.  =========================================================
Q.
I am a Class 12 (science) student. After Class 12, I would like to study biotechnology abroad. Please suggest biotechnology courses of some good colleges abroad (probably in the United States of America). What is the eligibility criterion? Will my Class 10 and 12 scores matter? How can I apply to those colleges, when and how? When and where is the English proficiency test (TOEFL) held? — Priya

A.
There are many courses in biotechnology including specialisations such as microbiology, molecular biology, genetics, plant tissue culture etc, which can be pursued in good universities abroad. To plan for such a study programme, you need to decide about 1) the country, 2) study programme, 3) eligibility requirements, and 4) financial requirements. An undergraduate degree programme in the United States takes four years to complete, and is based on a semester system. Students pursuing a liberal arts degree can choose from a variety of subject options for the first two years and then specialise in their ‘major’ in the last two years. In the United Kingdom, it is three years. Admission to US institutions is based on a number of factors, including the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) and the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) scores, as well as class rankings. The tests are conducted several times a year. Your marks in Class 10 and Class 12 do matter, but are not the sole criterion for admission. Success in gaining a seat in a foreign university depends as much on your academic profile as on the personal statement submitted with the application. Besides sounding convincing, this must convey your earnestness of purpose and the usefulness of the course to your field of work when you return to India. There are websites such as www.collegeboard.com and www.usnews.com which give listings of colleges and universities and their ratings, costs of study, funding, and admission requirements and more details. UK institutions do not ask you to take an entrance test; admission is based on your school marks, teacher recommendations, personal essays, and extra-curricular activities. You also need to clear the English language fluency test, the IELTS or the TOEFL. And as far as costs are concerned, higher education abroad is expensive because unlike in India, it is not subsidised by the government.  =========================================================
Q.
I am a BSc in airlines, tourism and hospitality management, pursuing my masters in aviation management through distance learning as I am a counsellor at an IELTS institute. How do I get into a managerial position in an airline? — Anita

A.
You have the training in travel and tourism but not the work experience that can enable you to work towards a managerial position in the airlines. Work in the airlines covers a general understanding of the travel industry, the organisation, marketing of tourist destinations, as well as the details of ticketing and reservations, national and international, along with planning of itinerary and documentation required for the same. As you already have a degree in travel and tourism, you may start working in the travel industry, whether with an airline or not, so as to get the work experience and understanding of this sector. Job prospects are now the greatest in travel agencies and tour operators, and in self-employment. After a few years, you can start your business by handling all the travel requirements of a client.  =========================================================
