Counselling for Career-16

Q.
I am 28, working with an information technology (IT) firm. I have a master’s degree in management - marketing (2005). I have been in sales and marketing, though my interest lies in counselling. How should I get into counselling? What are the training courses available in Mumbai? What kind of experience is needed for it? What is the job scope in India (Mumbai) and overseas, especially in the Gulf? — Mr Curious

A.
Today, there is a growing need for counsellors to assist people with problems, whether emotional, behavioural, career-related or psychological. This is a highly-specialised field requiring a background in psychology as this provides an insight into human behaviour which helps counsellors to understand clients’ problems. I would suggest that if you are serious about pursuing this as a career, you could do an MA programme in psychology followed by a diploma or degree in counselling which could be taken up through distance-learning while you gather work experience. Institutes offering postgraduate diplomas in guidance and counselling include the University of Mumbai and Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai. In addition, Indira Gandhi National Open University, New Delhi, offers a certificate course in counselling through correspondence. Annamalai University has a distance-education diploma course in guidance and counselling. National Council of Educational Research and Training, the premier institute for training in career counselling, runs programmes in New Delhi, Ajmer, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar and Mysore. With your training you can take up organisational behaviour also to work in the human resource department of a company. Organisational psychology is concerned with the study of workplace behaviour. Organisational psychologists are supposed to work towards increasing workplace productivity, selecting employees best suited for particular jobs, and managing the workforce.  =========================================================
Q.
I want to make a career in automobile designing but I am a student of commerce (TY BCom). Please guide me. — Prasad Mestry

A.
Automobile design requires knowledge of the manufacture of a vehicle. The main thrust in this area is on design and development of vehicles of all kinds. This technologically-advanced branch of engineering design requires a sound knowledge of physics and maths. You can become an automobile designer either through the study of automobile engineering or industrial design. As you are a student of commerce, it may not be possible to take up automobile design, but if you are highly creative and have drawing skills, you can consider other options in design, such as graphic design, interior design and animation and multimedia design. Animation is a growing sector with an increasing demand for trained animators. Animation jobs in India are mainly in demand for production work coming from foreign companies as well as from domestic television channels. Training in animation and multimedia can be taken up through short diploma courses alongside college studies. Many institutes offer these courses, including: * Maya Academy of Advanced Cinematics at 23 centres across the country including Delhi and Mumbai, www.maacindia.com * Arena Multimedia, run by Aptech in several cities including Delhi and Mumbai * Toonz Animation Academy in Mumbai, Delhi, Nagpur, Hyderabad and some other cities, www.toonzacademy.com * ZICA - Zed Institute of Creative Arts, Mumbai, www.zils.esselgroup.com * Graphiti School of Animation, Mumbai, www.graphiti.net and many others The Academy of Animation & Gaming (www.aag.co.in), Noida, and Picasso Animation (www.picasso.co.in), New Delhi, too, offer degree programmes in animation and multimedia technologies.  =========================================================
