Counselling for Career-12

Q.
I am pursuing B.Sc chemistry hons(first year) from Delhi University. I had biotechnology in Class 12 and wanted to make career in that field. But I couldn’t get admission in a good engineering college offering BTech in biotech and Delhi University does not have a BSc in biotechnology. So I took up chemistry. If I study biotechnology in Australia would that help me get a job here? For getting admission there for the next winter session I will have to give IELTS exam till January end. But I would not be able to take the exam in such a short time. If I wait for the 2012 spring session, I would have completed my chemistry honours by then. Will it be fine to pursue a bachelors degree again? Or should I look at a masters option? I have spoken to people who have done masters in biotechnology in India but have not been able to get good placements in India. Does biotechnology have many career options in India? If not biotechnology, then is environment science a better option? Can I do masters in environmental science after chemistry hons? —Anivind Kaur

A.
BSc chemistry is an excellent base degree for further study in biotechnology or other fields of life sciences. If you plan to do an MSc in biotechnology in Australia you can apply for the programme starting in July or February. Australian university courses start in February or July each year. For the February course applications need to go in by September or October, while for July term applications need to be sent by February/ March. Alternatively, you can consider doing an M Sc in biotechnology in Australia after graduation in India. However, there are excellent courses in biotechnology in India too. Prominent Institutions that offer M Sc in biotechnology include: Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, Jamia Hamdard, New Delhi, Jadavpur University, Calcutta; Anna University, Chennai; Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar; Benaras Hindu University, Varanasi; and G.B.Pant University of Agriculture and Technology, Pant Nagar (UP). A combined entrance examination for admission to the MSc programmes is conducted by Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. It is true that the scope in this field has not grown in the way it was anticipated a decade ago. However, with chemistry which is a life science, there are many other careers you can explore, such as environmental science, medical laboratory technology, food processing, forestry, plastics and packaging, pharmacy, and so on. These fields require post-graduate training, either at the degree or the diploma level. Pharmacy and jobs in medical laboratory technology are other openings for those with a life sciences background. An MPharm qualifies you to work with pharmaceutical companies in manufacturing or product development. College of Pharmacy, Delhi University offers an M Pharm, while DU has several affiliated institutes offering courses in laboratory technology that would qualify you to work in hospitals, clinics and health centres offering diagnostic support to the doctors. If you are interested in environment science, you can do an M Sc in this field, offered by several universities. ===================

I am a captain in the merchant navy and have been in this profession for the last 15 years. The eligibility for this profession is 10+2 and subsequent educational and examination for higher ranks. I have obtained a BSc nautical science (equivalent) degree from University of Mumbai in recognition of the Certificate of Competency that I obtained as a merchant navy professional. Please guide me on how to obtain an MBA (executive or distance learning). Every university I’ve got in touch with wants to know my graduation marks. I have wasted almost a year but have not been able to obtain an additional qualification. Which university will accept my equivalent graduation certificate and give me an MBA degree? —Capt Vineet Batura

A.
As your BSc nautical science degree is from Mumbai University, you should be able to get the degree certificate showing the equivalent degree certification, as well as the mark sheet from the Registrar of Mumbai University. Please check with Mumbai University about this. All institutes offering the MBA programme, whether through regular or distance learning courses, will accept students with such a certification from a recognised university. Moreover, with a background in the merchant navy you could also take up specialisation in shipping management. The Narottam Morarjee Institute of shipping in Bombay, offers a two-year post graduate diploma in Shipping Management as well as the Fellowship in Advanced Shipping Practice for professionals in the shipping Industry. The Academy of Maritime Education and Training, Chennai, has designed an MBA programme with focus on Shipping and Logistics Management through distance learning. The programme is suitable for those who are already trained in the merchant navy with Master Mariners Licence, or Marine Engineers Licence, as also graduates from a recognised university. ===================

I am in Class 8. I wish to become a space scientist. I need your help to know what courses I should do. I am a good student and learning French. — Aparajita

A.
Definitely... why not aim for the stars? The most important subjects for getting into astronomy and space science are physics and maths in Class 11 and 12. You also must have good analytical ability and scientific acumen. After school, you may do a BSc programme in physics or in engineering, before taking up a master’s or a PhD in a specialised field of astronomy or space science. Depending on your interests, you can opt for aeronautical/ electrical/electronics/ electrical communications engineering, if you want to do take up the technical aspect of space technology. On the other hand, if you want to do theoretical astronomy or observations, it would be better to go through the science stream such as astrophysics, atmospheric and space science and so on. There are many institutes in India that offer specialised courses in space sciences. Moreover, the Indian Institute of Science (www.iisc.ernet.in), Bangalore, now offers integrated BSc/ MSc programmes in different fields of science, with scholarships to budding young scientists. Do check the website. Hope you will become another Sunita Williams! Good luck! - ===================
