Q.
I am a Class 12 commerce student. I want to pursue chartered accountancy (CA) and marketing. Does any college provide a good course in marketing, which would also give me some time to study for my CA exams? — Vinayak
A.
The CA programme is very challenging and strenuous. It will be difficult for you to take up any other study programme with it. If you are interested in this career, it is best to solely pursue this programme until you clear your CA final exam. After that, you could consider other courses of study. You may also consider going for a BCom or a BA degree, and then do CA, an MBA, or a PG diploma in marketing. The advantage of doing this is that outside CA, you have other postgraduation options to fall back upon. Moreover, graduates are exempted from clearing the CPT and they can move directly to level two of the CA programme. -

Q.
I am a BTech in computer science and engineering, working as an engineer since 2007. I studied professional communication in college. I have taught children as a part of our corporate social responsibility. However, to teach in a school, I need a BEd degree and English as a subject in my bachelors. Is there any other way to become a teacher? — Saumya
A.
I can see that you are really interested in teaching English. However, as there are regulations regarding appointment of teachers, you may find it difficult without undergoing some training. You can get into this field by gaining some work experience teaching English informally at any school. Some schools do accept untrained teachers at lower salary levels. Once you have at least two years’ full-time regular work experience, you can consider the BEd programme through distance education which is offered by many universities (only for in-service teachers and those with at least two years’ teaching experience in a primary, higher or senior secondary school recognised by the central or state government. Alternatively, you can take up one of the short-term training courses for teaching English as a foreign language (TEFL), offered by several institutes. The British Council offers an excellent programme which can equip you to teach English to adults. It also offers IELTS training for trainers, suitable for those with a good command of the language. The Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults (CELTA), awarded by the University of Cambridge, is an internationally-recognised qualification. A course for teachers with little or no experience in teaching, it combines theory (through input sessions) and practice (through teaching practice sessions and assignments). Also, the Central Institute of English and Foreign Languages, Hyderabad, (now EFL University) offers two teacher-training programmes through the distance mode – postgraduate certificate in the teaching of English and postgraduate diploma in the teaching of English. The university is also launching an MA programme in English through the distance mode. -

Q.
I am confused whether to become a computer engineer or not. Should I appear for the IIT Joint Entrance Examination? Is there any other option for me? — Lalit
A.
If you have an inclination for computer studies and have taken science with maths, there are several routes to a career in computers and information technology. There is an increasing demand for professionals with a variety of computer specific qualifications in this field. If you have opted for physics, chemistry and maths, you can apply for a BSc programme in IT or computer science; or bachelor of computer applications if you have any other stream and maths. While the BSc computer science programme covers basic concepts and training in software tools, along with skills to adapt to ever-changing technology, the BCA programme is designed to prepare students to deal with the development of applications for different operating systems. You can pursue diploma or certificate courses at institutes such as NIIT and APTECH and DOEACC certified institutes, which offer training in different computer languages and technologies like C, C++, Java, Cobol, UNIX and many others. The ‘A’ and ‘B’ level DOEACC programmes can prepare you to deal with applications such as Microsoft Office suite, web browsers like Internet Explorer, Paintbrush, and Photoshop etc. Each level of learning betters your competency and enables you to move to higher and more sophisticated technology. Depending on your skills, you could take up jobs such as those of systems analyst, systems programmer, analyst programmer etc, and work with database management, networking, and coders and so on.
